James Franklin Issues First Public Statement After Accepting Virginia Tech Job
James Franklin has officially been introduced as the new head coach of the Virginia Tech Hokies, and with the announcement came his first public remarks about taking over the program.
“I’m honored and humbled to join the Hokie family,” Franklin said in the university’s release. “My goal is straightforward: restore this program to unparalleled excellence, build something enduring, and serve Virginia Tech, the Commonwealth, and our incredible fan base with integrity, passion, and pride. I can’t wait to get started with our players, staff, and the entire Hokie community.”
Franklin previously led Penn State from 2014 until earlier this season, finishing his tenure in State College with a 104–45 record. Including his three years at Vanderbilt, he holds a 128–60 overall head-coaching record.
University leaders — including Board of Visitors rector John Rocovich, president Tim Sands and athletic director Whit Babcock — all praised the hire. Rocovich noted the board’s “enthusiastic support,” while Sands said Franklin would bring the “leadership and inspiration” needed to deliver the on-field results Hokies fans “expect and deserve.”
Babcock called Franklin an ideal fit for the program.
“James Franklin reflects the spirit, vision, and relentless drive for excellence that will bring Virginia Tech Football back to the national spotlight,” Babcock said. “This is a defining moment for our program, made possible by strong support from University leadership, the Board of Visitors, our donors, and the Search Committee.
“James is an energetic leader, tireless recruiter, and a proven builder of championship-caliber teams. We’re excited to welcome him and his family to Blacksburg and trust him with the future of Hokies football.”
Franklin steps in for Brent Pry, who was dismissed after starting the 2025 season 0–3. Interim coach Phillip Montgomery has guided the Hokies to a 3–4 record since taking over.
Despite falling short of expectations this year, Virginia Tech has reached bowl games in each of the last two seasons, going 13–13 overall and 9–7 in ACC play during that span. It now falls on Franklin to elevate the program and push it back into contention.
