Seahawks Sign Son of Hall of Famer Jerry Rice

The Seattle Seahawks are bolstering their wide receiver depth by adding former 2024 draft pick Brenden Rice to their practice squad.

In a set of corresponding roster moves, Seattle also signed running back Velus Jones while releasing tight end Marshall Lang and cornerback Mike Reid.

Rice — the son of NFL legend Jerry Rice — was drafted in the seventh round (225th overall) by the Los Angeles Chargers in 2024. Though initially projected as a mid-round selection, he slid to the final pick of the draft and became the 32nd wide receiver chosen. During his final season at USC, Rice led the Trojans with 12 touchdown receptions and spent two seasons catching passes from Caleb Williams, the 2022 Heisman Trophy winner and No. 1 pick in the 2024 draft.

Rice appeared in only three games during his rookie year with the Chargers, contributing primarily on special teams and recording no receiving yards. He was waived during final roster cuts on August 26, 2025. The New England Patriots added him to their practice squad on November 4, but he was released a week later before now landing in Seattle.

The Seahawks have been hit hard by injuries at wide receiver, with Dareke Young (quad) on injured reserve and Tory Horton (shin) recently sidelined for the road game against the Rams. The team also placed practice squad receiver Tyrone Broden on IR last week. Rice effectively fills Broden’s spot, serving mainly as depth. Seattle’s current starters — Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Cooper Kupp, and newly acquired Rashid Shaheed — remain locked into their roles.

Rice will aim to make an impact on the practice squad and position himself for a chance to climb the depth chart behind Jake Bobo or Cody White.
