Notre Dame Likely to Be Without Its 2024 CFP Standout for the Season
On Tuesday, the College Football Playoff selection committee placed Notre Dame at No. 9 heading into Week 13.
If the Fighting Irish can finish strong with wins over Syracuse on Saturday and Stanford on Nov. 29, they appear to have a solid shot at reaching the CFP.
Notre Dame has strung together eight consecutive victories behind the emergence of freshman quarterback C.J. Carr, who has thrown for 2,487 yards with 21 touchdowns and six interceptions.
According to Tyler Horka of On3, wideout Jaden Greathouse is now healthy and could suit up against Syracuse after dealing with a hamstring injury for much of the season. However, head coach Marcus Freeman said he intends to keep Greathouse sidelined in order to preserve a redshirt year, only deploying him if the team faces an emergency situation.
Horka shared on X: “Marcus Freeman says though WR Jaden Greathouse is healthy and available now, the plan is still to sit and redshirt him… If a break-glass-in-case-of-emergency situation arises, Greathouse will gladly play to help Notre Dame win at the expense of saving a year of eligibility.”
The junior receiver from Austin, Texas, has made just four catches for 73 yards this season. He appeared briefly in Notre Dame’s first four games and hasn’t played since Sept. 27 against Arkansas.
Last season, Greathouse topped the team in receiving with 42 receptions for 592 yards and four touchdowns. He was instrumental in Notre Dame’s January CFP run, posting seven catches for 105 yards and a touchdown in a 27–24 comeback win over Penn State.
He followed that performance with six receptions for 128 yards and two touchdowns in the Irish’s narrow 34–32 loss to Ohio State in the national championship.
With Greathouse unavailable for most of the year, Carr has developed strong connections with Jordan Faison and Malachi Fields, the latter leading the team in receiving.
