Iowa’s New Head Coach Makes History in Debut Season
Iowa’s first-year head coach Ben McCollum has already etched his name into the program’s record books. The Hawkeyes have opened the season 5–0 — a start largely expected given their light non-conference slate — but McCollum insists there’s still plenty of growth ahead despite the early success.
Their most recent victory, a 93–54 rout of Chicago State, featured the fewest points allowed by Iowa this season and further energized the home crowd. While the level of competition will rise soon, the team is undeniably trending upward.
Historic 5–0 Start
Even with the modest schedule, Iowa’s dominance is noteworthy. As highlighted on X, McCollum’s squad has won each of its first five games by at least 19 points. According to SportsGrid’s Ben Stevens, this marks the first time an Iowa team has done so since at least the 1938–39 season — making McCollum’s start historically significant.
Stevens summed it up: “Ben McCollum era off to a STRONG start.”
A Real Test Ahead
Iowa now heads into a neutral-site matchup against Ole Miss, a step up in competition and a better indicator of what this roster can accomplish. Regardless of how the tougher part of the schedule unfolds, McCollum has already shown why fans were excited about his hiring.
For now, Iowa has every reason to celebrate this early milestone — and every indication that its new coach is the real deal.
