Sought-After Free Agent Turns Down Chargers, Chooses Chiefs Instead
The Los Angeles Chargers entered Week 12 at 7–4 and on their bye week, still waiting to activate first-round rookie running back Omarion Hampton from injured reserve. With Kimani Vidal as the only healthy back on the active roster, the team appeared to be in the market for help.
The NFL was caught off guard when the Houston Texans released fourth-year running back Dameon Pierce just before their Thursday night matchup with the Buffalo Bills. Pierce had been involved in trade discussions both during the offseason and at the deadline, making his sudden release even more surprising.
Chargers fans immediately recognized the potential fit. Pierce seemed like an ideal addition to Greg Roman’s offense, especially with all three of the team’s top running backs currently on IR. But reports quickly surfaced that several teams were pursuing Pierce once he cleared waivers and became a free agent.
And shortly after the Chiefs’ overtime win against the Colts, news broke that Pierce had made his decision. He opted to sign with Kansas City over the Chargers and numerous other interested suitors.
According to Aaron Wilson, the Chargers were among the teams still in the running late in the process, but the Chiefs’ latest win may have helped sway Pierce and his agent.
Los Angeles will get a close look at Pierce soon enough — they face the Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium in Week 15.
