JUCO OL Jonah Rodriguez Explains His Commitment to North Carolina
Jonah Rodriguez, an offensive lineman from San Diego (Calif.) Southwestern Junior College, recently announced his commitment to North Carolina and shared why he chose the Tar Heels.
Rodriguez received an offer from North Carolina in October and took an official visit to Chapel Hill earlier this month. He also visited Colorado in the Midwest last week but ultimately decided over the weekend to commit to the Tar Heels.
“Coach (Will) Friend, the offensive line coach, was a big factor in my decision,” Rodriguez said. “He has a lot of experience and can help me develop into the player I want to be. There’s a great opportunity for me at North Carolina, and with Coach Belichick there, it’s a huge plus. I love the way they operate—it’s very much like an NFL organization, and I love the overall fit.”
Rodriguez also highlighted the program’s pro-style offense and focus on player development as key reasons for his commitment.
“They run a pro-style offense, which fits me well,” Rodriguez explained. “They really emphasize player development, and the coaches know how to prepare you for the NFL, which is crucial for me. Plus, they’re losing seven offensive linemen this year, so there’s a lot of opportunity to step in and play right away. Of course, nothing is guaranteed, but if I do my part, I’ll have a shot, and that’s all you can ask for.”
Rodriguez’s journey to North Carolina has been eventful. He originally signed with San Diego State as part of the 2023 class but transferred to Arizona in May 2024. After entering the transfer portal again in December 2024, he enrolled at Southwestern JC this past March, where he had a strong season.
“I really feel like I’ve found a home at North Carolina,” Rodriguez said. “My goals are all laid out in front of me. My dream is to play in the NFL, and I truly believe the staff at UNC can help me get there.”
