Jets Add Former 49ers Draft Pick Ahead of Dolphins Matchup
The New York Jets are bolstering their secondary ahead of their Week 14 game against the Miami Dolphins. NFL insider Aaron Wilson reported that the Jets are signing defensive back Samuel Womack to their practice squad, a move later confirmed by Womack’s agency, JL Sports. No corresponding roster transaction has been announced.
A Young Defensive Back With Upside
Womack, 26, was selected by the San Francisco 49ers in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL Draft (No. 172 overall). He spent his first two seasons with San Francisco, including a run to the Super Bowl in February 2024, where the 49ers fell to the Kansas City Chiefs in overtime, 25–22.
Womack has bounced around since then—waived by the 49ers before the 2024 season, claimed by the Colts, then waived again in 2025 and picked up by the Titans. Tennessee released him last week. Across 45 career games and 10 starts, he has totaled 66 tackles, 12 pass breakups, three interceptions, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, and a tackle for loss.
Jets’ Pattern of Targeting Former Titans Corners
Womack becomes the second former Titans defensive back the Jets have added this year. On September 23, general manager Darren Mougey acquired Jarvis Brownlee Jr. in a late-round pick swap with Tennessee.
Brownlee, 24, entered the league as a fifth-round pick in 2024 and had already made 16 starts with the Titans before joining New York. Since the trade, he has taken over as the Jets’ starting nickel corner, appearing in seven games and recording two pass deflections, a forced fumble, a tackle for loss, and 36 tackles. His forced fumble remains the Jets’ lone defensive takeaway of the year.
Mougey’s Under-the-Radar Moves Paying Off
Brownlee has not only contributed immediately but is also positioned as an important long-term piece for the Jets. He carries just a $1.1 million cap hit in 2026 and is under contract through 2027. Teammate Quincy Williams even referred to him as a “baby linebacker” because of his physical style of play.
Despite his high penalty rate—eight flags this season, continuing a trend from Tennessee—the Jets appear unbothered. As ESPN’s Rich Cimini noted, Brownlee’s emergence allowed the team to move on from Michael Carter II, and his forced fumble remains the Jets’ only takeaway so far, which “should count for something.”
