Braves Bolster Pitching Depth with Trade for Rafael Montero from Astros
The Atlanta Braves strengthened their pitching depth by acquiring right-handed pitcher Rafael Montero and cash considerations from the Houston Astros on Tuesday night, in exchange for a player to be named later.
Montero made three appearances for the Astros this season before the trade, pitching four innings and allowing two earned runs on three hits, two walks, and five strikeouts.
The cash included in the deal will cover most of Montero’s $11.5 million salary.
Montero was part of the Astros’ 2021 World Series team, although he didn’t appear in the postseason that year. However, he played a key role in their bullpen during the 2022 postseason, posting a 1.93 ERA in 10 appearances as the Astros went on to win the World Series.
“He was a big part of the bullpen for a while,” said manager Brian Snitker. “They said he’s been throwing the ball well. He has experience in those situations, so it’s just about getting him back to being himself.”
Over his career, the 34-year-old reliever has a 4.71 ERA, a 1.46 WHIP, and 464 strikeouts in 466 1/3 innings.
The Braves hope to make the most of this acquisition, especially given the struggles of their bullpen this season. With a team ERA of 4.71, the bullpen’s inconsistencies have cost them several games. While the Braves have a history of revitalizing veteran arms, Montero will need to perform quickly, especially with the team having gone 1-8 heading into Tuesday.
The Braves have already cycled through some bullpen options this season, including designating Héctor Neris for assignment after two appearances against the Padres and sending Jesse Chavez back to the minors after one appearance. With some pitchers still working to find their rhythm, a new arm that can make an immediate impact would be a welcome addition.
