After the 2024 season, the Cincinnati Reds lost several catchers to free agency across Double-A, Triple-A, and the major leagues, leaving only Tyler Stephenson on the 40-man roster. This created a need for more depth at the catcher position, especially in the upper levels of the minor leagues. The Reds’ first step was to sign Alex Jackson to a minor league deal soon after minor league free agency began. They later brought in another talented player on a minor league contract.
The 25-year-old Jackson was selected in the second round by the Miami Marlins in 2018 after graduating from Brookwood High School. He has steadily progressed through their farm system. In 2023, he had his best minor league season, playing the entire year with Double-A Pensacola, where he hit 23 home runs and finished with a batting line of .258/.302/.472.
In 2024, Banfield spent the entire season playing at Triple-A Jacksonville. However, his power numbers didn’t carry over as effectively at this level; he posted a batting line of .247/.297/.379 with nine home runs over 371 plate appearances. He also registered 24 walks and 105 strikeouts, continuing a pattern of a low walk rate and high strikeouts throughout his career.
Banfield may have potential value as a hitter against left-handed pitchers, as he achieved a .306/.330/.482 line against them in Triple-A during 2024. His performance in 2023 was more balanced, but he had a slight edge of 31 points when facing right-handed pitchers.
Defensively, Banfield is best known for his strong skills behind the plate. He is an athletic receiver with a solid throwing arm. In 2024, his average pop time to second base was 1.95 seconds, which is considered above average and better than any Reds catcher that season.
The Reds are anticipated to sign more catchers this offseason to secure a more established backup, either through free agency or trade. Nonetheless, the additions of Banfield and Jackson enhance their depth, similar to last year’s acquisition of Austin Wynns.
