Colts Trade Down, Still Snag Top Offensive Talent in New Mock Draft

In a new draft projection, the Indianapolis Colts are expected to trade back in the first round but still come away with a premier offensive weapon at tight end.

If there’s one near-certainty in the Colts’ 2025 draft strategy, it’s that they’ll prioritize adding a tight end at some point. Last season, the tight end position was among the least productive in the NFL, and both of the team’s primary starters are no longer on the roster. It’s the one spot where the team simply can’t afford to head into the new season without a serious upgrade.

While there are several viable options available in the early rounds, it would be smart for Indianapolis to address the need quickly.

Matt Verderame of Sports Illustrated recently shared a unique mock draft in which every first-round selection involves a trade. In his scenario, the Colts trade down but still land their ideal tight end.

Pick No. 23 – Indianapolis Colts: Colston Loveland, TE, Michigan

Trade Details: Colts receive picks No. 23 and No. 54 from the Packers in exchange for No. 14 and No. 117.

Much like Dallas in this mock, the Colts would benefit greatly from this move. After years of needing a reliable tight end, they find one in Michigan’s Colston Loveland, who racked up 1,466 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns during his college career. He’s a strong fit for head coach Shane Steichen’s offensive system.

Loveland, standing at 6-foot-6 and weighing 248 pounds, is one of the few tight ends in this draft class with star potential from day one. He’s not only a pass-catching threat but also brings value as a three-down player thanks to his blocking ability.

Given the minimal production from the Colts’ tight ends in 2024 — just 467 total yards — Loveland would be a major step up. In fact, his individual yardage exceeded the Colts’ entire tight end group in each of the last two seasons. Over three years at Michigan, he totaled 117 catches for 1,466 yards (averaging 12.5 yards per reception) and 11 touchdowns, earning All-Big Ten honors twice.

As of now, Indianapolis is relying on Drew Ogletree and Will Mallory — who have just 40 career receptions combined — along with Jelani Woods, Albert Okwuegbunam, and Sean McKeon. Clearly, a new leader at the position is overdue, and Loveland could be just the player to fill that role.
