Red Sox Target $108 Million All-Star Pitcher in Four-Player Trade Proposal
After finishing their third consecutive season without a winning record (81-81) in 2024, the Boston Red Sox are looking to bolster their starting rotation. President of baseball operations Craig Breslow has expressed interest in acquiring an ace, and Seattle Mariners right-handed pitcher Luis Castillo could be a potential target.
The Red Sox have been active in free agency, pursuing outfielder Juan Soto and linked to top pitchers Corbin Burnes and Max Fried. However, if Burnes and Fried sign elsewhere, Boston might need to explore the trade market to land an ace.
One possible trade target is Garrett Crochet from the Chicago White Sox, but Castillo, with his more proven track record, is also a strong option. A hypothetical trade scenario proposed by FanSided’s Zach Pressnell suggests the following:
- Red Sox receive: Right-handed pitcher Luis Castillo
- Mariners receive: Outfielder Wilyer Abreu, infielder Chase Meidroth, and outfielder Jhostynxon Garcia
Abreu, who won a Gold Glove and finished sixth in the AL Rookie of the Year voting, posted a .781 OPS with 15 home runs and 58 RBIs in 447 plate appearances. Meidroth and Garcia are both ranked among Boston’s top 15 prospects according to MLB.com (11th and 12th, respectively).
Acquiring Castillo would provide the Red Sox with a three-time All-Star who has started at least 25 games each season since 2021, with a solid 3.51 ERA and 1.18 WHIP. He’s entering the third season of a five-year, $108 million extension he signed with Seattle. Castillo is set to earn $24.15 million annually from 2025-2027 and has a $25 million vesting option for 2028.
