South Carolina Gamecocks: Big Opportunities Ahead After Bye Week

The South Carolina Gamecocks have significant chances on their schedule following the bye week. After their victory over Oklahoma, their record stands at 4-3 overall and 2-3 in conference play. While hopes for a college football playoff are likely dashed, and competing for a conference title seems off the table, there are still major opportunities left for the Gamecocks once they return.

Next up for South Carolina is a home game against Texas A&M, currently at the top of the conference standings and in a strong position for the conference championship. Following that, they have a road match against Vanderbilt, a home game against Missouri, and a road trip to Clemson to finish the season. This gives the Gamecocks a chance to play the ultimate spoiler.

Depending on the outcome of the Texas A&M vs. LSU game this weekend, South Carolina could significantly impact A&M’s playoff chances if they lose to the Tigers or at least drop them in the standings. Vanderbilt is currently 2-1 in conference play and has a matchup against Texas this weekend, so a win for the Gamecocks could send the Commodores tumbling down the rankings. Missouri’s strength of schedule has faced criticism, and a second loss this season could compromise their playoff ambitions. Clemson, along with Miami, is vying for the top spot in the ACC, but a loss to South Carolina to end the season would make their path to the conference championship much trickier, assuming they win their other games.

Though this season may not lead to playoff contention, the Gamecocks have the opportunity to compete against these teams, and playing spoiler can bring its own excitement.
