Texas A&M Shows Interest in Talented Transfer Guard Marcus Millender

Texas A&M basketball is among the numerous programs that have reached out to Marcus “Smurf” Millender, a dynamic sophomore guard in the transfer portal, according to Tobias Bass of The Athletic.

Following their NCAA Tournament exit at the hands of Michigan State and the departure of head coach Buzz Williams to Maryland, the Aggies saw a major roster shakeup — at one point, they had just one player remaining. Now, new head coach Bucky McMillan is tasked with rebuilding from the ground up.

Millender, who averaged 14.9 points and 3.3 assists last season at UTSA, has caught McMillan’s attention. The 5’11” sharpshooter fits the mold of McMillan’s up-tempo, defense-driven style of play—nicknamed “Bucky Ball”—which leans heavily on three-point shooting. Over his two college seasons, Millender has hit 43.8% from deep and collected 80 steals.

This isn’t the first time McMillan has pursued Millender. When Millender initially entered the portal, both McMillan’s Samford squad and Stephen F. Austin—then led by current A&M assistant Kyle Keller—expressed interest, per The Portal Scoop.

Before joining UTSA, Millender spent a season at South Alabama, where he averaged 9.7 points in nearly 28 minutes per game. His performance jumped significantly after transferring to San Antonio, particularly in shooting efficiency.

Millender is drawing attention from several other schools, including Ole Miss, Texas Tech, VCU, and Georgia. However, Texas A&M could have a geographic edge in his recruitment—Millender is a Houston native and former Clear Brook High School standout, and College Station is just a couple of hours from home.

If he joins the Aggies, Millender would strengthen a backcourt that already includes North Alabama transfer Jacari Lane and four-star recruit Jeremiah Green.
