Ravens Go All-In on Defense in Latest Mock Draft
The Baltimore Ravens are focused on strengthening their defense this offseason.
While the Ravens boast one of the most complete rosters in the NFL, there’s no question about which side of the ball requires the most attention.
Baltimore’s offense had a historic season, with Lamar Jackson and Derrick Henry earning Offensive Player of the Year finalist honors and setting several records. Meanwhile, the defense ended the year strong, but the first half was rough. The team also lost more defensive talent than offensive, leaving them thin at linebacker and on the interior defensive line.
As the NFL Draft approaches, many analysts, including ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. and Field Yates, believe defense is the team’s primary focus. In their latest mock draft, they have the Ravens selecting defensive players with their first three picks.
The first pick is Georgia safety Malaki Starks at No. 27 overall. Starks, a three-year starter for the Bulldogs, is a popular choice for Baltimore in mock drafts.
“This is what the Ravens do in the draft,” Yates explained. “They patiently let the board fall to them and then grab steady, reliable prospects. Starks would fill the free safety spot and provide great value. His instincts, versatility, and ball skills would complement Kyle Hamilton perfectly.”
While Starks’ athleticism has been questioned, especially in comparison to South Carolina’s top safety prospect Nick Emmanwori, his versatility and fit in Baltimore’s defense make him a solid option.
The second pick is Ohio State edge rusher JT Tuimoloau at No. 59 overall, addressing another major need for the Ravens.
“Baltimore’s edge rush is in need of reinforcements, particularly with Odafe Oweh and Kyle Van Noy in the final years of their contracts,” Yates said. “Tuimoloau is ready to contribute immediately; he’s one of the most polished pass rushers in this draft class.”
Lastly, the Ravens would select South Carolina linebacker Demetrius Knight Jr. at No. 91 overall, adding depth to the linebacker corps and creating competition for third-year pro Trenton Simpson.
“Knight is a playmaker, with three forced fumbles, two sacks, and an interception during his lone season at South Carolina after transferring from Charlotte and Georgia Tech,” Yates noted. “I see him thriving alongside Roquan Smith.”
While the Ravens have some offensive needs, particularly along the offensive line, their focus on defense early in the draft makes sense given the state of their roster.
