The Sun Devils lost one of their most athletic youngsters, Plas Johnson, to a knee ligament rupture in Saturday’s practice.
Arizona State redshirt freshman cornerback Plas Johnson is expected to miss the 2025 season after suffering a torn ACL in his left knee during Saturday’s practice.
The injury occurred early in ASU’s evening session during a non-contact special teams drill, which took place ahead of a scheduled scrimmage. Through 10 of their 15 spring practices, this is believed to be the Sun Devils’ first significant injury setback.
Johnson, listed at 6-foot-0 and 180 pounds, appeared to be in the mix for the team’s fourth cornerback spot and was also expected to contribute on special teams as a gunner. He added roughly 15 pounds over the past year while redshirting out of Chaparral High School in Scottsdale.
Despite the loss, ASU remains in a solid position at cornerback. Junior starters Keith Abney and Javan Robinson return, with support from redshirt freshman Rodney Bimage and senior Nyland Green, a transfer from Purdue. Freshman Joseph Smith could round out the depth chart as the fifth corner.
Johnson stood out last season as one of the more athletic young players on the roster. Ranked No. 33 in Arizona’s 2024 class by 247Sports, he was considered an under-the-radar talent due in part to a slender frame—since bulked up by 20 pounds—and his high school team’s struggles during his senior year.
