After several days filled with outgoing transfer news, Maryland football has secured its first new addition from the spring portal window. Cam Rice, a defensive lineman from Ohio University, announced his commitment on Saturday evening, opting for Maryland over more than 20 other scholarship offers.
This signing comes at a crucial time for Maryland, especially after losing starting defensive tackle Lavon Johnson to Texas. Rice, a graduate student with one year of eligibility left, adds valuable experience and talent to a defensive front that experienced significant losses due to graduation.
Rice played for the last two seasons at Division II West Liberty, where he posted impressive stats: 89 tackles, 37 tackles for loss, 14.5 sacks, 11 pass breakups, and six forced fumbles. He then transferred to Ohio for the 2024 season, tallying 30 tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss, three sacks, and five quarterback hurries.
Before his visit to Maryland this weekend, the 6-foot-5, 295-pound Rice took official visits to Purdue, Tennessee, and Mississippi State. However, the Terps quickly made a strong impression during his time in College Park.
A former standout at Morgantown High School in West Virginia, Rice began his college journey as a walk-on linebacker at West Virginia in 2021. He moved to West Liberty the following year, transitioned to defensive line, and earned the Mountain East Conference Defensive Freshman of the Year award. In 2023, he was also nominated for the Harlon Hill Award, recognizing the most valuable player in Division II.
Rice’s path has been anything but conventional. He transitioned from a high school quarterback to a linebacker, then flourished as a Division II standout, and is now poised to make an impact at the FBS level. He brings an unstoppable drive and a competitive edge to Maryland’s defensive line.
“Considering defensive tackles, I believe I’m more athletic than many, and I feel I’m really quick off the line,” Rice shared. “But what truly defines my game is my relentless attitude. I play with a high motor, and I think that’s what sets me apart from others.”
In a conversation with 247Sports’ Ryan Callahan last week, Rice mentioned he was searching for the right opportunity for his final season.
“I want to be in the best position to maximize my skills, which starts with being on the field and getting playing time,” Rice explained. “Additionally, having a great coach and mentor this last season is essential for elevating my game to the next level.”
“I wasn’t heavily recruited at all during high school or during my previous transfer attempts, so I want to make the most of this opportunity and ensure I make the right choices.”
