The Hokies couldn’t even get a visit from a portal target before he commits to an SEC school.
Just four full days into the spring transfer portal window, and things are already heating up in the college football world. Since the portal officially opened on Wednesday, players have been lining up visits — and in some cases, locking in destinations before those visits even happen.
Virginia Tech had a few players schedule trips to Blacksburg, including Maryland offensive lineman Terez Davis. Davis became a hot commodity the moment he entered the portal and wasted no time lining up visits — including one with the Hokies set for Monday. But that visit is now off the table.
Maryland OL commits to Ole Miss before Virginia Tech visit
Davis visited Lane Kiffin and Ole Miss, and by Saturday, the 6-foot-5, 305-pound lineman had committed to the Rebels — just two days before he was expected in Blacksburg. While it might seem like a surprise, it’s understandable when you look at the full picture.
As a freshman last season, Davis appeared in 10 of Maryland’s 12 games, logging 300 snaps while allowing just one sack and two pressures. Those numbers quickly made him a target for several programs, including Virginia Tech.
Following the Hokies’ spring game last weekend, head coach Brent Pry highlighted the offensive line — along with the secondary — as standout groups this spring. Still, with first-year offensive line coach Matt Moore building a unit for both the immediate and long-term future, adding someone like Davis would’ve been a significant boost.
Virginia Tech still has more transfer targets scheduled to visit in the coming days. The hope now is that Pry and his staff can get those players on campus before another program locks them up first.
