North Carolina Tar Heels Positioned to Seize Key Opportunity

UNC Basketball Among Top Contenders for Five-Star Point Guard

The UNC basketball staff has been actively pursuing Taylen Kinney for nearly two months now. Head coach Hubert Davis and his team entered the race for the highly-touted Overtime Elite (Ga.) point guard in late February, and the Tar Heels are now one of the top programs under consideration in what promises to be a highly competitive 2026 recruitment.

According to Sam Kayser of League Ready, other major contenders for the 6-foot-2, 180-pound Kinney include Purdue, Kentucky, Louisville, Arkansas, Kansas, Oregon, Texas, Xavier, Tennessee, and Cincinnati.

On Wednesday, Kentucky head coach Mark Pope and two assistants made an in-home visit with the five-star prospect.

Kinney is currently ranked No. 17 overall, No. 4 among point guards, and No. 2 in Georgia in the 247Sports 2026 Composite rankings. Already holding more than two dozen offers, Kinney is known for his explosive playmaking ability.

At this stage, UNC has extended offers to nearly a dozen 2026 recruits. While Davis and his staff have yet to secure their first commitment for the cycle, they haven’t faced significant setbacks with their top targets either.
