Orioles-Royals Trade Idea Sends $9 Million All-Star to Kansas City
As the Kansas City Royals start to pick up momentum, upgrading their outfield remains a top priority for the team.
Royals outfielders are currently tied for the worst in Major League Baseball with a -0.9 fWAR and have hit the fewest home runs in the league, totaling just three. This lack of production is a major concern, and relying on top prospect Jac Caglianone to turn things around—especially since he’s never played outfield before—seems like a risky strategy.
Fortunately, the trade deadline offers teams like the Royals an opportunity to address such needs. While it’s too early to know who will be available, one baseball writer has pointed to a potential target from the Baltimore Orioles: center fielder Cedric Mullins.
On Saturday, Newsweek’s Hunter Mulholland suggested that Mullins, a 2021 All-Star who has started this season strong, could be an ideal fit for Kansas City as he heads toward free agency this winter.
“Mullins would give the Royals an opportunity to move on from Isbel in center field, and with Jac Caglianone waiting in the minors, it could pave the way for the former first-round pick to make his MLB debut,” Mulholland noted.
While the Orioles aren’t out of the playoff race yet, if their season continues to falter, general manager Mike Elias might look to trade Mullins, whose contract is set to expire. If that happens, the Royals should be at the front of the line for the veteran center fielder.
Mullins, 30, is off to a stellar start this year with a .295/.433/.590 slash line, six home runs, and 20 RBI. Earning $8.7 million this season, Kansas City would need to take on a portion of his salary if they acquire him.
If the Orioles manage to turn their season around, the likelihood of Mullins being available decreases. However, if Baltimore’s rough start continues, he could be a player to watch as the trade deadline approaches.
