Carlos Mendoza Offers Candid Response to Mets’ Heartbreaking Loss
The New York Mets suffered a crushing defeat on Sunday, letting a six-run lead slip away in a heartbreaker against the Washington Nationals.
After jumping out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning and holding a 7-1 advantage heading into the seventh, the Nationals mounted a dramatic comeback. The rally started in the seventh when Riley Adams hit a three-run homer off José Butto, capping off a five-run inning that brought Washington within a run at 7-6.
With the Mets hoping to avoid another late collapse, Ryne Stanek entered in the bottom of the ninth to preserve the lead. However, a leadoff double by Alex Call set the stage for CJ Abrams, who singled in Call to tie the game at seven.
Looking to send the game into extra innings, disaster struck when Pete Alonso made a bad throw to first base while covering the bag. The errant throw allowed Abrams to score the winning run, giving the Nationals a walk-off victory and sealing the Mets’ second loss of the series in heartbreaking fashion. This was also the second time Stanek had blown a save opportunity in the series.

When asked about the tough loss, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza didn’t hold back. “Tough one there, let that one get away, especially after that outing from [Tylor Megill],” Mendoza said. “A lot of good things offensively early in the game, and for us to be up 7-1 and let that go, it’s a tough one. We’ll turn the page and get ready for tomorrow.”
The loss was especially painful as it wasted an outstanding performance from Tylor Megill. The right-hander pitched a season-high 6.1 innings, allowing just three runs on three hits, with one walk and nine strikeouts, while throwing a career-high 105 pitches. Mendoza described Megill’s outing as “electric” as the 29-year-old now holds a 1.74 ERA over his first six starts of the season.

With another rough relief outing from Butto and Stanek’s second blown save of the series, the Mets will look to rebound and try to split the four-game series with their division rivals on Monday, with Griffin Canning set to take the mound.
