Illinois DB Tyler Strain Withdraws from Transfer Portal, Returns for 2025 Season
Strain decides to stay with the Illini for his fifth and final year after briefly entering the portal.
Illinois defensive back Tyler Strain, who entered the spring transfer portal less than two weeks ago, has decided to withdraw his name and return to the Illini for the 2025 season, according to On3’s Pete Nakos.
The Pace, Florida native played in seven games last season, starting six of them. Over his four years in Champaign, Strain has accumulated 57 tackles (including one for loss), three interceptions, and nine pass breakups across 35 games.
Strain hasn’t publicly explained why he entered the portal in the first place. While his playing time dropped in 2024, which may have influenced his decision to explore other options, this remains speculative.

Regardless, Strain’s decision to return is a positive development for Illinois. Head coach Bret Bielema has seen a number of players depart this spring, so bringing back a senior with starting experience is a welcome boost.
Strain is expected to compete for a starting spot in 2025 or, at the very least, take on a larger role than last year. He may also see increased opportunities on special teams.
