Gophers Secure First Running Back Commitment for 2026 Recruiting Class
Ezekiel Bates has become the first running back to commit to the University of Minnesota’s 2026 recruiting class, marking a significant milestone for new RBs coach Jayden Everett.
Bates, a 2026 running back from Malvern, Pennsylvania, made the announcement on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, expressing his excitement about his decision. “1000% committed! Let’s Work!! #RTB #SkiUMah,” Bates posted, officially committing to the Gophers.
Standing at 5-foot-11 and weighing 210 pounds, Bates chose Minnesota over 16 other Division I offers, including notable programs such as Virginia Tech, Boston College, and Wake Forest. Despite currently being unranked by recruiting services like 247Sports, On3, and Rivals, Bates’ decision is a major win for Minnesota.

Virginia Tech extended his first power conference offer in May of last year, and the Gophers followed suit with an offer in February 2023. Bates made an unofficial visit to Minnesota in late March before committing in mid-April. While he had previously planned an official visit to Boston College, it remains unclear whether he will still attend that visit in June.
This commitment is a significant achievement for Coach Everett, as Bates becomes his first high school recruit for the 2026 class. Despite a shortened junior season due to injuries at Malvern Prep, Bates scored eight touchdowns as a sophomore in 2023. A strong senior year could see his stock rise on recruiting boards.
