4-Star QB Trae Taylor Chooses Nebraska Over Illinois, LSU, and Texas A&M

Nebraska football has secured its first commitment for the 2027 class, landing a four-star quarterback from Illinois.

Trae Taylor, a standout QB in the 2027 class, has committed to Matt Rhule and the Huskers, opting for Nebraska over offers from Illinois, LSU, and Texas A&M.

“I’m gonna stay home and go to Illinois,” Taylor said, initially putting on an Illini hat before tossing it aside and revealing a Nebraska hat, followed by a Husker baseball jersey under his hoodie.

At 6-foot-3 and 186 pounds, Taylor is a rising junior at Carmel Catholic High School in the Chicago area. According to the 247Sports Composite, he is ranked as the No. 2 prospect in Illinois and the No. 35 overall prospect in the 2027 class. He is also rated as the third-best quarterback in his class.

Taylor explained that the Nebraska coaching staff played a key role in his decision. “Coach Rhule and Coach Thomas have all been very genuine,” he said. “I feel like they can get me better both on and off the field. I really believe they can help me reach the next level, which is the NFL. I feel like Nebraska’s gonna be the best place for me, and we have the best fans in the nation.”

247Sports Director of Scouting, Andrew Ivins, describes Taylor as a “cerebral quarterback prospect” who excels in a structured environment. “He uses clean footwork and a solid base to attack the intermediate and deep parts of the field, but can also make dynamic moves under pressure to extend plays,” Ivins said. “Although he posted a losing record in his first year as a starter, his game tape shows a different story. He was able to hit his marks with precision and threw for over 3,000 yards, threading the ball through defenders.”

With Taylor’s commitment, Nebraska’s quarterback situation is solidified for the next few years. The Huskers return sophomore starter Dylan Raiola, and the rest of the quarterback room includes redshirt freshman Marcos Davila and true freshman TJ Lateef, both of whom were four-star recruits.

Additionally, Nebraska has already secured a 2026 quarterback commitment in Dayton Raiola, bringing the total number of 2026 commitments to three, with Taylor being the first for the 2027 class.
