Rutgers Bolsters Offensive Line with Addition of Illinois Transfer Zach Aamland

Rutgers football has added more depth to its offensive front, landing a commitment from former Illinois offensive tackle Zach Aamland. The 6-foot-6, 305-pound lineman announced his decision Saturday morning following a campus visit on Friday.

Aamland, a native of South Brunswick, New Jersey, played his high school ball at the Hun School in Princeton. He joins the Scarlet Knights with three years of eligibility remaining.

A three-star prospect in the 2023 class, Aamland was ranked the No. 22 player in New Jersey. Rutgers was among his top schools coming out of high school, and he spoke highly of the program at the time.

“What stood out to me was how much Coach Schiano truly cares about his players and their futures beyond football,” Aamland said. “During his first stint, Rutgers had some incredible moments, and I believe they’re close to getting back to that level with him leading again.”

Aamland held offers from several Power Five schools out of high school, including Boston College, Duke, Kentucky, Louisville, Maryland, Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Vanderbilt, and West Virginia.

Though he didn’t see the field during his two years at Illinois, that’s not uncommon for Big Ten offensive linemen, who often need time to physically develop for the demands of the position.

Rutgers has had strong recruiting ties to the Hun School in recent years, landing six players from the program over the last five recruiting cycles.
