Cowboys Named Biggest NFC East Offseason Loser Despite Recent Hopes
Not everyone is sold on the Dallas Cowboys’ culture shift this offseason.
The Cowboys’ offseason has been a bit unconventional. They waited until the final moments of Mike McCarthy’s tenure to make a change, then conducted an unusual search that leaned heavily on familiar faces. Ultimately, they hired Brian Schottenheimer, a choice that was met with skepticism.
Since taking over, however, Schottenheimer has won over local media, demonstrating a clear vision and a commitment to bringing in players with “high character.” There’s been noticeable excitement surrounding how he and his staff worked with the rookie class at the recent minicamp, helping to shift the narrative around the team.
Still, the national perspective remains skeptical. In a recent article by Bleacher Report’s Mo Moton, the Cowboys were named the biggest offseason loser in the NFC East.
Moton argued that the Cowboys “downgraded” by hiring Schottenheimer, a coach with less experience compared to McCarthy, who is still seen as a more accomplished figure. He also pointed out that the team lost their top running back, Rico Dowdle, and didn’t do enough to address the running game.
“Without a solid ground game and with an inexperienced head coach,” Moton wrote, “the Cowboys could struggle to make the most of Dak Prescott’s return.” He added that if Prescott stays healthy, the Cowboys should still be a better team than last year, when Cooper Rush had to step in as quarterback, but the lack of a strong run game and Schottenheimer’s inexperience could hinder their progress.
Until the Cowboys prove the critics wrong, these concerns will continue to follow them. Coach Schottenheimer is well aware of the doubt surrounding him, and he’s determined to leave his mark on the team.
