As the 2025 NFL Draft approached, many predicted that Colorado Buffaloes quarterback Shedeur Sanders would be a first-round pick. With teams like the Tennessee Titans, Cleveland Browns, New York Giants, New Orleans Saints, Las Vegas Raiders, Seattle Seahawks, and Pittsburgh Steelers all looking for possible franchise quarterbacks, it seemed inevitable that Sanders would be selected before the end of the first night.
Surprisingly, Sanders was not picked on the first day and didn’t hear his name called on Day 2 either. He finally found out which NFL team he would join on Day 3, when the Cleveland Browns traded up to select Deion Sanders’ son with the 144th overall pick in the fifth round.
However, Sanders’ selection by the Browns didn’t come without controversy. Many are questioning why a player who was reportedly rated as a second-round talent on numerous draft boards didn’t get picked during the first 64 selections.
In fact, one distressed Colorado fan has taken legal action against the NFL, suing for $ 100 million in damages for the “emotional distress” he experienced while witnessing Sanders’ drop in the draft.
The lawsuit states that the plaintiff attended Sanders’ debut game against the TCU Horned Frogs on September 2, 2023, where he recognized his “exceptional talent and potential” as a quarterback. He also mentioned that he “regularly consumes media content related to Sanders.”
However, the lawsuit points out that there were leaked reports claiming Sanders “tanked interviews, wasn’t prepared, and was overly cocky.” The plaintiff believes these narratives have unjustly harmed Sanders’ reputation and prospects as a player.
Ultimately, the plaintiff argues that “these slanderous statements reflect biases that influenced the NFL’s decision-making, causing emotional distress and trauma to the plaintiff as a fan and consumer.”
As if Sanders’ NFL journey didn’t already get off to an intriguing start, “John Doe” has stirred the pot even further.
