Iowa Coach Kirk Ferentz Shares Thoughts on Transfer Portal Strategy
Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz recently offered some insightful remarks regarding the transfer portal.
The Hawkeyes made notable moves in the transfer portal this offseason, a shift from their usual approach. Not only did they potentially solve their quarterback dilemma by bringing in former South Dakota State signal-caller Mark Gronowski, but they also added several key players to strengthen their roster.
For a program that has historically been hesitant to lean on the transfer portal, Iowa’s activity in this area marks a significant step forward. Ferentz was asked to reflect on the team’s portal acquisitions now that the spring portal window has closed.
“For the most part, everyone has been what we expected them to be,” Ferentz said. “Injuries are just part of the game, and you can’t predict or control them. They can certainly set back a career, but overall, the guys we brought in have largely lived up to expectations.”
Ferentz also mentioned that Gronowski is progressing faster than anticipated in his recovery from shoulder surgery, which bodes well for his readiness to take the field in 2025.
Overall, Ferentz is pleased with the progress of Iowa’s transfer portal class, noting that the team has done well in supplementing its existing roster.
“I want to give credit to everyone involved in the process, including the coaches and personnel staff for their hard work,” Ferentz said. “Our main focus has been to complement the team and fill in key areas.”
Iowa finished with an 8-5 record last season, falling to Missouri in the Music City Bowl. It was a letdown for Ferentz’s squad, but with the addition of Gronowski and a few other intriguing transfers, the Hawkeyes could prove to be a formidable force in the Big Ten next season.
