Detroit Lions Deliver Two Big Offensive Boosts for Jared Goff
The Lions are making it clear they’re doubling down on building around Jared Goff, executing two significant moves to strengthen the offense. First, they hired Drew Petzing as offensive coordinator. Shortly after, they provided a major update regarding star running back Jahmyr Gibbs and his long-term future in Detroit.
General manager Brad Holmes left little doubt about the organization’s intentions.
“The bottom line is this, we want Gibbs here for a long time,” Holmes said. “He is truly the centerpiece of our offense.”
Holmes added that discussions with Gibbs’ representatives are beginning, though the exact timeline remains flexible. After another standout season, Gibbs is entering Year 3 of his rookie deal worth $17.85 million. Analysts project he could secure a four-year extension worth roughly $76 million, including about $52 million guaranteed — potentially making him the NFL’s highest-paid running back. His cap number is also expected to jump from $2.9 million to $7.185 million next season, with a fully guaranteed fifth-year option in 2027.
New Offensive Coordinator in Place
Detroit also reshaped its coaching staff after a 9-8 season that fell short of the playoffs. The team parted ways with John Morton and brought in Petzing, who previously served as offensive coordinator for the Arizona Cardinals from 2023 to 2025.
Holmes praised the hire, noting Petzing checked every box while maintaining continuity within the system. He also credited head coach Dan Campbell for adding both Petzing and Mike Kafka without overhauling the offense. The goal is stability — ensuring Goff won’t need to relearn an entirely new playbook heading into 2026.
Taylor Decker Confirms Return
The Lions also received notable news along the offensive line. Veteran left tackle Taylor Decker announced he will return for his 11th NFL season, sharing the update on Instagram with a message signaling his commitment.
Decker had contemplated retirement before the 2025 season but ultimately decided to continue playing. His return, however, comes amid financial questions. Detroit could save $11.6 million this year — and nearly $18 million in 2027 — by releasing him.
Currently projected to be roughly $9.6 million over the salary cap, the Lions face tough roster decisions as they look to address other needs, including adding support for pass rusher Aidan Hutchinson along the defensive line.
Still, taken together — the commitment to Gibbs, the hiring of Petzing, and Decker’s return — Detroit is sending a clear signal: the organization is focused on maximizing its offensive core and giving Goff every opportunity to succeed moving forward.
