Tennessee fans are not happy.
After bouncing back from two tough losses to Kentucky, the Tennessee Volunteers looked like a transformed team. They were handling the basketball more carefully and applying pressure on defense, making life difficult for opponents. But all of that seemed to vanish on Tuesday night against Missouri.
The Vols struggled with turnovers, and a few defensive mistakes allowed Missouri to claw back into the game. What had seemed comfortable quickly felt shaky. Even though it was just the first half, Tennessee’s double-digit lead seemed anything but secure. Being up by ten, given the team’s history of struggling to maintain leads, raised concerns. Credit to Missouri—they needed this win and played with urgency—but Tennessee, as a significant favorite, let a winnable game slip away. This was one Rick Barnes will regret.

It’s clear Tennessee fans are frustrated, and their concerns are understandable. The Vols’ inconsistency has become part of their identity. Nate Ament and Ja’Kobi Gillespie didn’t play at their best, and the team needs someone to step up. As the NCAA Tournament approaches, Tennessee will need to lock in for six consecutive games—but on paper, they’re capable.
Missouri had the home-court advantage and a do-or-die mentality, which explains part of Tennessee’s unraveling. While watching it happen was frustrating, it wasn’t shocking. Fans will likely forgive this loss if the Vols can secure a major win on Saturday against Nate Oats and Alabama—but that won’t be easy.
