We’re all waiting for the NCAA to make up its mind.
Speculation has been building for some time that fan favorite Jordan Gainey might suit up for the Tennessee Vols once again next season. While he’s currently out of eligibility, a potential NCAA decision to grant players an extra year could pave the way for his return.
Throughout the offseason, the veteran guard has dropped several hints suggesting he’d be open to extending his time in Knoxville. He reinforced that idea in a recent video appearance alongside Tennessee forward Cade Phillips. During their conversation, Phillips directly asked Gainey about the rumors of a possible comeback—and Gainey didn’t hold back in his response.

Jordan Gainey is hoping to return to Tennessee basketball next season
“I’ve been here two years—wish it had been four,” Gainey said with confidence. “Hopefully I’ll get the chance to come back for a third. Who wouldn’t want to be part of this? I’d love to return and be a Tennessee Vol one more time.”
Gainey began his college career at South Carolina Upstate before transferring to Tennessee ahead of the 2023-24 season. Over the past two years, he’s been a dependable contributor off the bench for Rick Barnes, averaging 6.8 points per game in his first year with the Vols and 11.6 in his second.
He also rose to the occasion during key postseason moments, showing poise and confidence whenever his number was called. Gainey consistently delivered what the coaching staff asked of him and quickly earned the respect of his teammates.
Now, all eyes are on the NCAA as everyone waits for a ruling that could determine Gainey’s future. While his situation remains uncertain, should he be granted another year of eligibility, there’s no question he’d welcome the chance to run it back in Knoxville.
