Iowa Hawkeyes Make Another Notable Transfer Portal Addition
The Iowa Hawkeyes have once again made a significant move in the transfer portal, adding former Florida International guard Ashton Williamson to their roster. Since Ben McCollum took over as head coach, the Hawkeyes have been active in reshaping their team following the departures that followed Fran McCaffery’s firing. Despite the challenges, McCollum has done an excellent job assembling a promising group for his first season, and this latest addition further strengthens their roster.
Williamson, who just finished his freshman season, brings solid potential to Iowa. Over 24.2 minutes per game, he averaged 7.3 points, 2.7 assists, 2.5 rebounds, and 1.6 steals, shooting 39.4% from the field, 32.9% from three, and 67.6% from the free-throw line. While his shooting percentages could use some improvement, it’s important to note that Williamson is still early in his development, and the experience he gained as a freshman starting 16 of the 33 games he played is already promising.
The 6-foot-2 guard had a season-high 14 points in two games, most recently in a loss to Middle Tennessee. He was initially a three-star recruit out of Gary, Indiana, and ranked eighth in the state for his class before committing to Florida International in 2024.
Williamson becomes the eighth player Iowa has added through the transfer portal this offseason, with five of those players coming from McCollum’s former school, Drake. After finishing last season with a 17-16 record and a 7-13 mark in Big Ten play, the Hawkeyes are looking to make significant improvements under McCollum’s leadership.
