The Chicago Blackhawks signed Tyler Bertuzzi to deliver offensive production, but he has yet to meet expectations.
Tyler Bertuzzi hasn’t lived up to expectations for the Chicago Blackhawks so far this season, despite being signed to a four-year, $22 million contract. While he didn’t directly cause their 4-2 loss to the Boston Bruins, his lack of offensive contribution continues to be a concern.
Through 26 games, Bertuzzi has just five goals and five assists. His performance in five-on-five play is particularly underwhelming, with only one goal and three assists. Compared to last season, his shot volume and scoring chances have dropped significantly, leading to a poor points-per-60-minute rate.
General manager Kyle Davidson had high hopes for Bertuzzi and Teuvo Teräväinen, signing both to multi-year deals when many of his other contracts have been shorter-term. Bertuzzi, a four-time 20-goal scorer, was expected to boost the Blackhawks’ offense, especially in a top-six role alongside Connor Bedard. However, he hasn’t found the consistency the team was hoping for.
Bertuzzi recognizes his struggles, expressing frustration and a desire to improve. After going 10 games without a goal, he hoped to break his slump by getting to the net more and creating offensive zone time with his line. Despite some near-misses, the Blackhawks have found themselves in many close games but lack the finishing touch.
Coach Luke Richardson acknowledged Bertuzzi’s missed opportunities, highlighting a key chance at the end of the first period. Bertuzzi has confidence that he can turn things around, drawing from past experiences of overcoming slumps with scoring streaks. While he insists he’s not feeling pressure from his contract, the Blackhawks hope to see him start living up to the expectations that come with it.
With the season slipping away, Bertuzzi remains optimistic and believes the team can still turn things around. He feels the group has the potential to close out games and improve, but they need to make that extra push to secure victories.
