K-State’s Matthew Driscoll Challenges Classic View on Comparison and Joy

New Kansas State associate head coach Matthew Driscoll wasted no time making his mark during his first press conference on Friday.

Much like his head coach, Jerome Tang, Driscoll shared some insightful perspectives, including a challenge to the popular saying, “comparison is the thief of joy.” Drawing from his time at North Florida, he boldly disagreed with this conventional belief.

“Some people say comparison is the thief of joy, but I don’t agree,” Driscoll said. “I think envy and jealousy are the real culprits. When I looked at Belmont, who beat us in the 2011 Tournament, I thought, ‘What can we do at our level?’ Despite certain academic and recruiting restrictions, I realized if we could replicate what Belmont did, we could unlock something special.”

In 2011, Driscoll’s Ospreys fell to Belmont in the championship game, a loss that inspired him to adopt strategies from Belmont’s successful structure to build his own program’s success. Now, as he joins Kansas State, Driscoll hopes to guide the Wildcats toward a successful 2025 season.
