Avalanche Trade Proposal Targets $92.8 Million Canucks Star
The Colorado Avalanche were eliminated in the first round of the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs, falling to the Dallas Stars in a seven-game series and ending what had been a promising season. As they enter the offseason, there’s speculation about whether the Avalanche will be active in the trade market.
Colorado has made some big moves in recent years, including sending Mikko Rantanen to the Carolina Hurricanes and making a major trade with the New York Islanders to acquire veteran center Brock Nelson before the trade deadline.
Despite these efforts, the Avalanche have not advanced past the second round in the past three years. With star players like Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar on the roster, expectations are high for the team. This could prompt them to make a significant acquisition.
Bleacher Report’s Adam Getz proposed a trade idea in which the Avalanche would pursue Vancouver Canucks center Elias Pettersson. Getz suggested that Pettersson, despite the Canucks’ public support, might welcome a change of scenery, and Colorado could be an ideal destination given the team’s offensive talent and style of play. He also noted that the Avalanche have shown they’re not afraid to make bold moves.
Avalanche Continue Search for Center Depth After Playoff Exit
Colorado has struggled with center depth behind Nathan MacKinnon for several seasons. In recent years, they’ve made moves for players like Nelson, Casey Mittelstadt, and Ryan Johansen, but these acquisitions haven’t always panned out. Some of these players, including Johansen (who was traded to the Philadelphia Flyers with a first-round pick) and Mittelstadt (traded to the Boston Bruins at the 2025 deadline), have already moved on.
Nelson, who scored six goals and 13 points in 19 regular-season games, as well as five points in the playoffs, could also be on his way out. As a free agent this July, he’s expected to have multiple suitors, and while Colorado has the resources to bring him back, they may find themselves in a competitive bidding war.
Canucks Challenge Elias Pettersson to Improve Performance
Once regarded as one of the NHL’s top centers, Elias Pettersson had a 100-point season in 2022-23. However, his performance has declined significantly in the last two years, and the Canucks are eager for him to turn it around.
Rick Tocchet, Pettersson’s former coach, acknowledged that the young center needs to enhance his preparation to get back to elite form. Tocchet emphasized the importance of obsessive dedication to training, suggesting that Pettersson’s approach needs to change for him to reach his potential.
With Tocchet now gone from the Canucks and Adam Foote taking over as head coach, there’s speculation that Pettersson might leave Vancouver this summer as well. Regardless, it’s clear that Pettersson must improve his game in the 2025-26 season if he wants to regain his elite status.
