Jacque Vaughn Explains Why He Returned to Kansas Under Bill Self
At his introductory press conference, new Kansas assistant coach Jacque Vaughn shared the reasons behind his decision to return to the school where he once played.
Along with major roster changes, the Kansas Jayhawks have completely revamped their coaching staff this offseason. Former KU point guard Jacque Vaughn is returning to Lawrence as an assistant coach, making history as the first NBA head coach to join the Jayhawks’ sidelines.
In his first public appearance since taking the job, Vaughn explained his decision to return to his alma mater. “I’ve been fortunate to work with some incredible coaches,” Vaughn said. “We often talk about players improving, and as a coach, I want to grow as well. The chance to work with a Hall of Famer like Bill Self, who has two national championships and is taking this program to new heights, really influenced my decision to come back home.”

Although Vaughn’s background includes head coaching roles with the Orlando Magic and Brooklyn Nets, which might be seen as overqualified for an assistant role in college basketball, his desire to contribute his NBA-level player development expertise was driven by a deep connection to his alma mater.
Bill Self also spoke highly of Vaughn, praising his accomplishments both on the court and in coaching. “It’s rare to have someone on your staff whose name is not only up on the west end with the retired jerseys but also on the east end as a two-time first-team academic All-American,” Self said. “And then to have a 12-year NBA career, win a world championship, and go on to be an assistant coach and three-time NBA head coach—what an incredible addition.”
While Kansas lost coaches Norm Roberts and Fred Quartlebaum recently, Vaughn’s hiring brings fresh, innovative coaching to the program.
