Why AJ Epenesa is a Good Fit for Chicago’s Defense
At 6’6″ and 260 pounds, Epenesa fits the type of pass rusher that defensive coordinator Dennis Allen values. The 26-year-old provides immediate stability and brings the potential for growth. Over the past three seasons, Epenesa has tallied 75 total tackles, 19 sacks, and three forced fumbles across 47 of 51 regular-season games. While he hasn’t yet become a dominant edge rusher, he’s a dependable rotational player who can contribute key snaps, helping keep the defensive line fresh.
Epenesa’s contract is also a major selling point. He’s entering the final year of his deal and is set to earn approximately $6 million in 2025. This makes him an affordable addition for a team like the Bears, who have plenty of cap space and won’t need to restructure existing contracts. This is in stark contrast to a potential trade for a high-priced player like Cincinnati Bengals star Trey Hendrickson, who would likely cost at least a second-round pick and demand a new contract worth over $20 million per year.

From the Bills’ perspective, this trade makes sense as they’re dealing from a position of strength. Buffalo has a deep defensive end group, including 2021 first-round pick Greg Rousseau, Pro Bowler Joey Bosa, 2025 third-round pick Landon Jackson, and 2024 fifth-round pick Javon Solomon. With Epenesa entering a contract year and Buffalo potentially needing to prioritize other re-signings, his future with the team may be uncertain.
By trading him now, the Bills can gain some draft capital instead of losing him for nothing in free agency next year.
