McCarthy, entering his second year, is set to take on the starting role, but he has yet to play a single snap in the NFL. While McCarthy has the potential, he remains an unknown at the professional level, making the situation unpredictable.
This uncertainty is why the Vikings should look to add a more reliable backup. Currently, Minnesota has Sam Howell on the roster, thanks to a fifth-round pick swap with the Seattle Seahawks, and Brett Rypien as the No. 3 quarterback. However, there are still quarterbacks available who could offer more stability if McCarthy struggles.
Although the Vikings are hopeful for McCarthy’s success, it’s always wise to have a safety net. This is where a potential trade could come into play.
Minnesota Vikings Consider Deal with Tennessee Titans
This trade proposal is something the Vikings could explore depending on how their summer unfolds. It’s a bit of a stretch, but it could be a smart move.
The Tennessee Titans made a significant move by selecting quarterback Cam Ward with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. As a result, Will Levis is reportedly unhappy with the situation. The Titans could be open to trading Levis for a late Day 2 or early Day 3 draft pick.
Minnesota has Howell and Rypien, but Levis, with his natural talent, is a more promising option than both of them. If McCarthy doesn’t perform well this summer, a Day 2 or Day 3 pick would be a reasonable cost for a reliable backup at quarterback. While a trade for Anthony Richardson from the Colts could also be a good option, the Levis deal seems more feasible.
The Proposal: Trading for a Developing QB
Here’s the pitch: The Vikings acquire Will Levis from the Titans in exchange for a 2026 fifth-round pick. It’s a win-win situation for both teams—Minnesota only gives up a modest pick, while the Titans can move on from the Levis drama and focus on Cam Ward’s future.
Levis, selected by the Titans in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft, was praised for his physical gifts, though scouts noted some flaws in his game that might be difficult to fix. His key strength is his “great arm strength,” and he has the ability to “drive the ball outside the numbers, into tight windows, and down the field with ease,” according to Bleacher Report.
With his inherent talent, Levis just needs an offensive-minded coach to help him reach his potential. Lucky for him, the Vikings have one of the NFL’s top offensive-minded coaches in Kevin O’Connell. O’Connell worked wonders with Sam Darnold after his struggles in the NFL, and he could do the same for Levis. Bringing Levis in would provide Minnesota with some security for the 2025 season, while also giving the young QB a chance to develop under a great coaching staff.
