4 Free Agent Targets for the Dallas Stars to Reach the Next Level in 2025-26
As the Dallas Stars look to improve their roster and contend for the Stanley Cup next season, they have several key decisions to make in free agency. One area of concern is their defense depth beyond Miro Heiskanen, Esa Lindell, and Thomas Harley. With the increasing talent in the Western Conference, the Stars will face tougher competition in their quest to return to the Western Conference Finals next year.
Additionally, the Stars could use more physicality in their lineup to better control the tempo of the game. This was particularly evident during their Western Conference Finals matchup against the Edmonton Oilers, where they struggled to match the intensity. The Stars are close to breaking through, but with a few tweaks this summer, they could be ready for a Stanley Cup run. Here are four free-agent targets they should consider:
4. Patrick Kane
Before anyone raises concerns about Kane’s past or injury issues, it’s important to acknowledge his consistent production in terms of points and goals. The Stars could benefit from his scoring ability, especially if players like Mikko Rantanen or Wyatt Johnston have off nights. Kane has a proven track record in the postseason and offers valuable experience. A one-year deal would be ideal, but his veteran presence could be just what the Stars need to win the Cup.
3. Ivan Provorov
Provorov would only be a viable option if the Stars can move on from Matt Dumba or Illya Lybushkin this summer. The defenseman can contribute on both the power play and penalty kill, making him a two-for-one type of signing. Though he doesn’t score much, he’d be an upgrade over Dumba or Lybushkin and could provide the defensive stability the Stars need, assuming the price is right and they can clear the necessary cap space.
2. Sam Bennett
Why not take another swing at adding Sam Bennett this offseason? The tough, physical forward has been a standout performer in the Stanley Cup Finals, and that kind of grit is something the Stars lack in their lineup. While the risk comes with Thomas Harley needing a long-term extension soon, Bennett could provide the spark the Stars need by not only bringing physicality but also supporting his teammates in tough situations.
1. Nikolaj Ehlers
What better way to stick it to the Winnipeg Jets than by signing one of their key players this summer? Ehlers has been a consistent point producer in the NHL and would be an upgrade over Jason Robertson in the postseason. His physicality and playmaking ability could be the missing piece for the Stars to push them closer to a Stanley Cup. It would be a major win for the Stars to sign him away from the Jets after eliminating them in the playoffs.
