However, while it’s important for the Mets to be aggressive, they must avoid making any decisions they’ll regret later. Here are three critical mistakes the Mets must steer clear of during this year’s Winter Meetings.

1. Skipping the Rule 5 Draft The Mets have the chance to make a selection in the Rule 5 draft on December 11th, with 31 players currently on their 40-man roster. Not taking a player could be a missed opportunity, especially considering there is virtually no risk involved. The Mets can select a player for just $100K, and if they don’t work out, the player can be returned for $50K. Last year, the Mets saw how valuable Rule 5 picks can be, even though they didn’t benefit directly. While it’s unlikely they’ll land a long-term player, skipping this draft would be a missed chance for a potential find.
2. Waiting for a Bargain on Starting Pitching With starting pitching a clear need for the Mets, they should act quickly rather than waiting for a perfect deal. Teams like the LA Dodgers and Chicago Cubs have already made aggressive moves to strengthen their rotations, and the Mets should follow suit. Free agents like Corbin Burnes, Jack Flaherty, or Max Fried could be ideal targets.
