Rumour: According to Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic, Devils goalie Jake Allen could attract attention on the open market.
Analysis: This year’s goalie class is relatively thin, which could boost Allen’s value. With Jacob Markstrom now the clear starter in New Jersey, Allen is expected to test free agency rather than remain with the Devils.
The veteran, who hails from Fredericton, New Brunswick, is a Stanley Cup champion and may be one of the more attractive goaltending options available. Among a pool that includes Alexandar Georgiev, David Rittich, Anton Forsberg, Alex Lyon, Dan Vladar, Ilya Samsonov, and Vitek Vanecek, Allen’s .906 save percentage with New Jersey stands out. He also stepped up with solid performances when Markstrom was sidelined.
Although a return to the Devils hasn’t been completely ruled out, LeBrun noted that cap space limitations could prevent General Manager Tom Fitzgerald from re-signing him.
What It Means:
Allen, who has previously served as a starting goalie for the St. Louis Blues and Montreal Canadiens, is coming off a deal with a $3.85 million average annual value over two years. Reports indicate he is seeking a similar or slightly higher figure—around $4 million per year—on his next contract.
LeBrun reported that roughly seven or eight teams have shown varying degrees of interest in Allen. One potential landing spot could be the Los Angeles Kings, who had a strong showing from Darcy Kuemper last season. Allen could serve as a reliable backup or injury insurance should Kuemper falter.
At this stage of his career, Allen is likely to be part of a goalie tandem or serve as a dependable second option. Still, his experience and stability between the pipes make him a valuable asset—particularly for teams looking to solidify their depth in goal.
