Auburn’s Hugh Freeze Pulls Off Major Recruiting Flip, Leaves Big Ten Powerhouse Reeling
Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze wasn’t on the sidelines when the Tigers suffered back-to-back defeats to Penn State in 2021 and 2022, but judging by his recruiting efforts, it’s starting to feel like he’s out to settle the score with Nittany Lions coach James Franklin.
Freeze recently pulled off a major recruiting coup by flipping four-star quarterback Peyton Falzone from Nazareth (PA), throwing Penn State’s plans for its 2026 quarterback class into question.
Falzone’s decision came as a shock to many in University Park. Just weeks ago, he had taken part in Penn State camps and appeared fully committed to his in-state program. Despite being a bit raw, Falzone brings high-end athleticism and speed to the table, along with an impressive 6-foot-5, 200-pound frame.
“It’s unclear how aggressively James Franklin’s staff will pursue a second quarterback in this class,” wrote Frank Bodani of the York Daily Record, noting the team hasn’t taken two QBs in a single class since Drew Allar and Beau Pribula in 2022.
Falzone cited his faith and family values as key reasons behind his decision to commit to Auburn—for now.
“Auburn is a place full of tradition,” he told 247Sports. “My family and I spent a lot of time talking about its mix of elite football, strong academics, and deep-rooted faith and community. That means everything to us. I’m blessed to have this opportunity. War Eagle.”
Falzone might have to wait his turn once he arrives on campus. Jackson Arnold could still have two years of eligibility left, while Deuce Knight might redshirt in 2025 and be around for four more years.
Still, Freeze’s success in landing Falzone marks a significant recruiting win over Penn State—something Auburn hadn’t achieved in quite some time.
