Royals Looking to Acquire 2-Time All-Star from the Yankees?
The Kansas City Royals are eager to build on their runner-up finish in the American League Central last season and are eyeing a potential trade with the World Series finalist to help improve their roster.
Kansas City already has one of MLB’s top talents in shortstop Bobby Witt Jr., and the team is reportedly exploring the possibility of upgrading his middle-infield partner this offseason.
According to R.J. Anderson of CBS Sports, the Royals are seen as one of the top potential destinations for New York Yankees second baseman Gleyber Torres.
Joining the Royals, Torres could bring stability to second base, a position that saw five different players take turns in 2024. His career trajectory, however, mirrors that of Michael Massey, who started most of the games at second for Kansas City last season.
Torres, a once highly touted prospect, was traded by the Chicago Cubs to the Yankees in 2016 for closer Aroldis Chapman during the Cubs’ World Series title run. He quickly became a fan favorite in New York following his MLB debut in 2018.
Although he earned All-Star honors in his first two seasons, Torres’ performance declined during a stint at shortstop in 2020 and 2021. While his numbers have improved since returning to second base, he has yet to develop into the superstar that was originally expected of him.
Despite remaining a solid second baseman with a career batting average of .265 and the ability to hit 20 or more home runs, the Yankees seem less focused on re-signing him, especially with the possibility of moving Jazz Chisholm Jr. back to the middle infield.
An MLB.com panel suggested that Torres could thrive with a fresh start away from the intense pressure of New York, and a move to a smaller-market team like the Royals could provide the perfect opportunity for a reboot in his career.
