Virginia Basketball Coach Ryan Odom Extended Through 2031-32
Virginia has extended head coach Ryan Odom’s contract through the 2031-32 season, according to a report from CBS Sports’ Matt Norlander on Tuesday.

Odom expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to continue leading the Cavaliers, thanking Virginia President Scott Beardsley and Athletic Director Carla Williams for their support. He also credited the players, coaches, staff and broader UVA community for the program’s progress.
One of the most notable aspects of the restructured agreement is a significant increase in compensation for Odom’s coaching staff. While the overall length of his contract was not dramatically changed, the additional investment in his staff could prove important as Virginia continues to build under Odom.
Williams praised Odom for making an immediate impact in Charlottesville, highlighting the culture of family he has created within the program and his commitment to Virginia’s traditions and values.
Odom originally signed a six-year contract that ran through the 2030-31 season. His first-year salary was $3.25 million, with annual increases of $100,000. The deal also included performance incentives tied to postseason appearances and victories, national rankings and individual awards.
Specific financial details of the new extension had not been publicly released as of Tuesday. However, the increased investment in Odom’s staff is significant, particularly given the importance of his assistants to the program. Odom has repeatedly praised key staff members Bryce Crawford, Matt Henry, Darius Theus and Kelsey Knoche, several of whom have been with him since he arrived in Charlottesville.
Virginia has also experienced some staff turnover this offseason. Associate head coach Griff Aldrich departed to become Pepperdine’s head coach, while longtime strength and conditioning coach Mike Curtis moved on to an NBA position.
Odom’s first season at Virginia was highly successful. The Cavaliers finished 30-6, reached the ACC Championship Game and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Virginia also entered the new year having suffered just two losses.
The Cavaliers are positioned for another strong season in 2026-27 after retaining every rotation player who had eligibility remaining. Virginia also added German wing Nolan Adekunle and transfer forward Jurian Dixon from UC Irvine.
The upcoming schedule will provide plenty of challenges, with Virginia set to face Duke twice along with North Carolina, UConn, Kentucky, Arkansas and Louisville. The Cavaliers will also take on several rising ACC programs, including Miami and Clemson.
Odom said he and his family are proud to call Charlottesville home and remain committed to building a program that represents the University of Virginia in the right way.
