Chargers Hit With Bitter Blow

Chargers’ Tyler Biadasz Suffers Injury, Carted Off During Joint Practice With 49ers

The Los Angeles Chargers suffered a potentially significant blow during Tuesday’s joint practice with the San Francisco 49ers when center Tyler Biadasz was forced to leave the field on a cart after sustaining a knee injury.

According to ESPN’s Kris Rhim, 49ers defensive tackle Sebastian Valdez landed on Biadasz’s knee during practice. After being evaluated by trainers, Biadasz was unable to put weight on the leg. Justin Herbert and several other Chargers teammates reportedly gathered around Biadasz to offer their support before he was taken off the field.

The injury could be especially concerning given Biadasz’s importance to the Chargers’ offensive line. Los Angeles signed the veteran center to a three-year, $30 million contract before free agency officially opened, making him one of the team’s most important offseason additions following years of instability at the position in front of Herbert.

Once Biadasz left practice, second-round rookie Jake Slaughter reportedly became the next center in the rotation.

What Tyler Biadasz’s Injury Could Mean for the Chargers

If Biadasz is forced to miss significant time, his injury could have a major impact on both the center position and the ongoing competition at left guard.

Biadasz had emerged as the most reliable piece of the Chargers’ interior offensive line, particularly after the coaching staff established fellow free-agent signing Cole Strange as the starting right guard.

The left guard competition has featured several players throughout training camp, including:

  • Kayode Awosika
  • Branson Taylor
  • Jake Slaughter
  • Trey Pipkins
  • Trevor Penning

A lengthy absence for Biadasz could push Slaughter into the starting center role for Week 1. The rookie had also appeared to be gaining momentum in the competition at left guard, making his potential move to center another major development.

Awosika entered camp as the early favorite for the left guard job, but Taylor’s rapid emergence after spending time on the practice squad has been one of the more notable developments of camp.

If Biadasz is unavailable, the left guard battle could ultimately come down to Awosika and Taylor. How that combination performs without Biadasz anchoring the interior will be an important storyline for the Chargers heading into the regular season.
