Illinois Fighting Illini men’s basketball coach Brad Underwood has his program in an excellent position following last season’s Final Four run, especially after the Big Ten captured its first national championship since 2000.
The Fighting Illini are now hoping to take the next step and compete for their first national title, and Underwood has plenty of time to pursue that goal. He is currently under contract through June 2032, giving Illinois stability as it continues building the program.
That long-term outlook could become even more promising with one of the nation’s top prospects in the 2027 recruiting class reportedly showing significant interest in Illinois. The prospect is expected to take an official visit to Champaign, giving Underwood and his staff an important opportunity to make their case for adding another potential difference-maker to the program.

NaVorro Bowman Jr. has quickly emerged as one of the biggest risers in the high school basketball landscape this summer, climbing to No. 15 in the SportsCenter NEXT Top 100.
The highly regarded 2027 prospect is now entering an important stage of his recruitment and has scheduled official visits to four prominent college basketball programs, including Illinois, according to Sam Kayser of League Ready Hoops.
Bowman Jr. will begin his visit schedule Sept. 4, when he travels to UConn, the team that knocked Illinois out of this year’s Final Four. Six days later, on Sept. 10, he will head to Champaign for an official visit with Brad Underwood and the Fighting Illini.
His final two visits will take him to Texas and Arizona. Bowman Jr. is scheduled to visit the Longhorns in Austin on Sept. 19 before traveling to Tucson on Sept. 25 to meet with the Wildcats.
At 6-foot-3 and 180 pounds, Bowman Jr. has a physical profile reminiscent of former Illinois standout Ayo Dosunmu. He combines impressive athleticism with the strength and explosiveness needed to become an impact player at the college level.
Basketball talent also runs in the family. Bowman Jr. is the son of former San Francisco 49ers and Penn State standout NaVorro Bowman, and he has developed a similar level of physicality and athleticism on the court, making him one of the more intriguing guards in the 2027 class.
Bowman Jr.’s recruitment has already attracted plenty of attention from some of the nation’s premier programs. In addition to UConn, Illinois, Texas and Arizona, schools such as North Carolina, Kansas, Kentucky and UCLA have also pursued the talented guard.
With many of those programs among the biggest players in the NIL landscape, the competition for his commitment figures to be intense.
On the court, Bowman Jr. has the skill set of a modern high-level guard. He’s extremely quick, can use his physicality to attack the basket and possesses advanced change-of-direction ability. His offensive game isn’t limited to the paint, either, as he can create his own shot from the mid-range and knock down shots from beyond the arc.
Illinois has plenty to sell as it attempts to land him.
The Fighting Illini are coming off a Final Four appearance and have established themselves as a program capable of giving young stars a platform to compete at the highest level of college basketball.
Freshman standout Keaton Wagler was a prime example last season, leading Illinois in scoring before eventually becoming the No. 5 pick in the 2026 NBA Draft.
The Illini also have another highly regarded freshman in Quentin Coleman, who is expected to play a major role for the program this season and further strengthen Illinois’ reputation as a destination for elite young talent.
Bowman Jr.’s recruitment is only beginning to heat up, but his upcoming visits should provide a clearer picture of where the talented guard stands. With his combination of athleticism, scoring ability and playmaking, he could be an ideal fit for Underwood’s system.
For Illinois, landing Bowman Jr. would be another major recruiting victory and further evidence that the program is building toward an extremely promising future.
