EXCLUSIVE: MSU Makes Massive Addition

STARKVILLE, Miss. — Mississippi State is taking another step toward strengthening its support system for transfer students by naming Katelynn Potter as the university’s first transfer services coordinator within the Center for Academic Excellence.

In her new position, Potter will work to make the transition smoother for students transferring from community colleges and other universities. She will provide tailored resources and guidance to help new transfer students adjust to life at MSU and navigate the university’s academic environment.

Potter is already familiar with the transfer process at Mississippi State, having previously worked as a transfer admissions counselor for the university.

As a former Itawamba Community College transfer who went on to earn her bachelor’s degree in public relations, advertising and applied communication from Mississippi State in 2020, Potter brings personal experience with the transfer process to her new position.

“Transfer students may be familiar with their previous college, but they don’t necessarily know how to navigate Mississippi State. Katelynn will be able to offer a level of support these students haven’t had before,” said Clay Armstrong, executive director of the Center for Academic Excellence.

Armstrong noted that Potter’s hiring is part of an initiative from the Office of the Provost to expand resources designed to improve student progression. The effort includes the creation of the Academic Achievement subdivision within MSU Academic Affairs and the coordination of several student-support resources.

“This position reflects Mississippi State’s commitment to meeting students where they are and giving them the tools they need to accomplish their individual goals,” Armstrong said. “I’m confident Katelynn will have a meaningful impact on our students.”

Potter said her main objective will be to make the transition to Mississippi State as smooth as possible for new Bulldogs while connecting them with important campus resources and partners that can improve their college experience.

“My goal is to make sure every student has the guidance, support and connections necessary to confidently navigate their undergraduate journey,” Potter said. “I want every transfer student I work with to view Mississippi State as a place they can call home—somewhere they feel supported, empowered to reach their academic goals and valued as an important member of the university community.”
