Boston Red Sox Dealt a Major Blow Ahead of Crucial Stretch

On Wednesday, the Boston Red Sox will wrap up their series against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Fenway Park.

Boston entered the finale having won the first two games of the series and was looking to complete a three-game sweep.

The Red Sox most recently picked up a 9-4 victory over the Diamondbacks on Tuesday.

UPDATE: Boston ultimately fell 7-6.

Red Sox Release 23-Year-Old

During their series against the Diamondbacks, the Red Sox also made a move involving their minor league pitching staff, announcing the release of right-hander Austin Ehrlicher.

According to MLB.com on Aug. 19, the Greenville Drive released Ehrlicher from the organization.

Ehrlicher never made an appearance for Boston at the MLB level.

The right-hander struggled in six appearances with Single-A Greenville this season, posting an 0-2 record along with a 6.94 ERA.

Andrew Parker of SoxProspects.com also reported a flurry of moves throughout Boston’s minor league system, including several pitching promotions and assignments. Griffin Kilander was promoted to Portland, Barrett Morgan moved up to Greenville, while Alex Kranzler and Carson Revay were assigned to Salem. Ehrlicher was released as part of the series of roster moves.

Ehrlicher originally joined the Red Sox organization after Boston selected him in the 18th round of the 2022 MLB Draft.

Now that he has been released, it remains to be seen whether another organization will take a chance on him before the 2026 season comes to an end.

Chris Henrique of Boston Sports Journal previously reported in June 2023 that the Red Sox had reached an agreement with Ehrlicher, who had been selected by Boston in the 18th round of the 2022 draft.

Looking At The Red Sox Right Now

The Red Sox endured a sluggish beginning to the 2026 season, struggling to find their footing early on.

However, Boston has completely changed its trajectory over the past few months and has emerged as a much stronger team.

At the moment, the Red Sox sit in third place in the American League East with a 68-58 record through 126 games.

The Red Sox have gone 4-6 over their last 10 games, while posting a 31-31 record across 62 contests at Fenway Park.

After wrapping up their series against the Diamondbacks, Boston will have Thursday off.

The Red Sox will return to action Friday night when they begin a series against the San Francisco Giants.
