Trade Proposal Sees Red Wings Acquiring $63M Star Defenseman in Major Move

The Detroit Red Wings are exploring ways to strengthen their defense this offseason, and one trade idea has them landing a star defenseman.

A proposal from Heavy.com suggests a blockbuster deal in which the Red Wings acquire Dougie Hamilton from the New Jersey Devils.

Red Wings Receive:

  • Dougie Hamilton

Devils Receive:

  • Michael Rasmussen

  • Justin Holl

  • 2026 first-round pick

This potential deal would be significant, with Detroit bringing in a legitimate top-pair defenseman in exchange for an NHL forward, an NHL defenseman, and a first-round draft pick.

Hamilton, 32, is a 6-foot-6 defenseman with three years remaining on his seven-year, $63 million contract. Known for both his offensive ability and defensive reliability, Hamilton would complement Moritz Seider on the Red Wings’ blue line. His presence would give Detroit a solid top pairing of Seider and Hamilton. Last season, Hamilton posted 9 goals and 31 assists, totaling 40 points in 64 games.

In return, the Devils would receive Detroit’s 2026 first-round pick and Michael Rasmussen, who was drafted 9th overall in 2017 and is 26 years old. Rasmussen could be a strong addition as a third-line center for New Jersey. Last season, Rasmussen scored 11 goals and recorded 10 assists for 21 points in 77 games.

Additionally, the Red Wings would send Justin Holl to New Jersey. Holl, entering the final year of his three-year, $10.2 million contract, could serve as a third-pair right-shot defenseman for the Devils. He contributed 2 goals and 6 assists for 8 points in 73 games last season.
