Now, halfway through the season, it’s clear they’ve received the contributions they hoped for—and more—sitting comfortably atop the division with a 55-37 record. While much of the spotlight has focused on their stellar pitching staff and AL Rookie of the Year candidate Cam Smith, there’s another largely overlooked player who has been just as integral to their success.
That player is centerfielder Jake Meyers, who is enjoying the best season of his career in his fifth year with the team.
After a few seasons of underwhelming performance, Meyers has come alive in 2025, boasting a career-high .308 batting average and a .774 OPS. This remarkable turnaround follows a disappointing 2024 campaign in which he posted a .219 average and an OPS below .650 as the everyday starter in center field.
Beyond his offensive explosion, Meyers has also been a standout defensively, continuing to make Gold Glove-worthy plays in center field—arguably one of the most demanding positions on the field.
While his incredible improvement may have seemed unexpected, the Astros have certainly benefitted from his rise, especially given the roster challenges they’ve faced. Injuries have been a recurring issue in 2025, with the outfield being particularly impacted. Despite this, Meyers has been a consistent presence, missing only a few games all season.
In short, Jake Meyers has been a key contributor to the Astros’ success, and he deserves recognition for his vital role. If he keeps up his strong performance in the second half of the season, he could help lead the team back to the top by the end of the year.
