Guardians Select Intriguing Infielder Dean Curley in Round Two of MLB Draft
The Cleveland Guardians continued their trend of prioritizing infielders in the MLB Draft, selecting INF Dean Curley with the 64th overall pick in the 2025 draft.
Curley, who played for the University of Tennessee, was a standout for the Volunteers last season, starting all 65 games and contributing significantly on both offense and defense.
The 21-year-old finished his second season at Tennessee with an impressive slash line of .315/.435/.531, posting an OPS of .966. He hit 14 home runs, along with eight doubles and a triple.
Known for his raw power, Curley’s abilities should only improve as he progresses through Cleveland’s minor league system.
According to MLB.com’s scouting report, Curley “has a strong understanding of the strike zone and works the gaps with a smooth, controlled right-handed swing. However, he has occasionally been too selective this spring and hasn’t been as effective against off-speed pitches as he was in his freshman year.”
Plate discipline and the ability to identify the right pitches are crucial for young players in the minors, and Curley’s existing skill set in this area bodes well for his development.
What stands out most about Curley is his exceptional defense. MLB.com gave him an arm grade of 65 and a fielding grade of 50. With his powerful arm, he could be a strong fit at shortstop or possibly third base.
Overall, Curley shows the potential to be both a reliable defender and a key hitter in the middle of the Guardians’ lineup at the major league level.
